Biodegradation of ether pollutants by Pseudonocardia sp. strain ENV478
Article Abstract:
The isolation and characterization of tetrahydrofuran (THF)-degrading bacterium, strain ENV478 is described and the ability of this strain to degrade ether-containing pollutants is evaluated and focused on 1,4-dioxane degradation. The results imply that inability of strain ENV478 and other THF-degrading strains to grow on 1,4-dioxane could be related to their inability to efficiently utilize this metabolite.

Biodegradation of the gasoline oxygenates methyl tert-butyl ether, ethyl tert-butyl ether, and tert-amyl methyl ether by propane-oxidizing bacteria
Article Abstract:
The ability of propane-oxidizing bacteria to degrade gasoline oxygenates, methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), ethyl tertiary butyl ether (ETBE) and tertiary amyl methyl ether (TAME) is investigated. Results indicate that bacterial isolates that can degrade propane can also degrade MTBE, ETBE and TAME. These isolates provide basis for biological degradation of gasoline oxygenates.

Researchers describe a bacterium that can biodegrade methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE). MTBE is a gasoline additive that leaked into groundwater throughout the US. Hydrogenophaga flava ENV735 can constitutively degrade MTBE.
