Change in bacterial community structure during in situ biostimulation of subsurface sediment cocontaminated with uranium and nitrate
Article Abstract:
The in situ change in microbial community composition in subsurface sediments cocontaminated with uranium [U(VI)] and nitrate during biostimulation was examined with a combination of push-pull activity tests, solid-phase geochemistry and cultivation-independent analysis. This study provides important inputs for reaction-based biogeochemical models that greatly aid in the development of in situ U(VI)bioremediation strategies.

Direct microbial reduction and subsequent preservation of uranium in natural near-surface sediment
Article Abstract:
Sediment samples are characterized in order to reveal the occurrence of, and pathways for, U(VI) reduction in the aquatic sediment containing naturally produced organics matter. The results indicate that U(IV) production might be mediated via direct reduction by enzymatic activities of microorganisms rather than indirect reduction by bacterially produced metabolites.

Microbial populations stimulated for hexavalent uranium reduction in uranium mine sediment
Article Abstract:
The mechanisms of uranium removal by microbial population via bioremediation process are described. Results indicate that in situ bioremediation process in the uranium mine ponds is mediated by Desulfosporosinus spp. that reduce hexavalent uranium and sulfate, while only hexavalent uranium is reduced by Clostridium spp.
