Changes in molecular size distribution of cellulose during attack by white rot and brown rot fungi
Article Abstract:
The mechanisms by which brown and white rot fungi degrade cellulose are fundamentally distinct. This conclusion was based on solid-state culture studies of the brown rot fungus Postia placenta and the white rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium. Results show that the brown rot fungus degrades the entire cellulose microfibrils in the amorphous region prior to cellulose utilization. The white rot fungus, in contrast, attacks only the surface and uses the cellulose as it is degraded.

Laccase component of the Ceriporiopsis subvermispora lignin-degrading system
Article Abstract:
Addition of 2,5-xylidine or copper exerts no influence on the laccase activity in the lignin-degrading fungus Ceriporiopsis subvermispora. Two major isoenzymes exhibiting high activity are purified to homogeneity and characterized. Thioglycolic acid and sodium azide inhibit the activities of these enzymes. N-terminal amino acid sequence of these enzymes is compared with those of laccases from other bacteria.

Biomass content governs fermentation rate in nitrogen-deficient wine musts
Article Abstract:
The main process in the wine industry is fermentation, but sometimes due to deficiency in nitrogen, fermentations become sluggish. In this study, metabolic flux balancing and biomass concentration experiments are conducted to see the fermentation rates, the results of which are discussed.
