Characterization of Listeria monocytogenes strains involved in invasive and noninvasive listeriosis outbreaks by PCR-based fingerprinting techniques
Article Abstract:
Strains of Listeria monocytogenes that cause outbreaks of invasive listeriosis may have differences in their DNA sequences compared to strains that cause outbreaks of non-invasive listeriosis. In a study of 32 strains, only infrequent-restriction-site PCR was able to distinguish the two types of strains.

Differentiation of the gene clusters encoding botulinum neurotoxin type A complexes in clostridium botulinum type A, Ab, and A(B) strains
Article Abstract:
A strategy is described to identify the clusters of genes encoding components of the botulinum toxin type A complexes in 57 strains of Clostridium botulinum types A, Ab, and A(B) isolated in Italy. In two C. botulinum type A isolates from the United states, a third type a toxin gene cluster is recognized, which is similar to C. botulinum type A(B) and Ab strains

Recovery of a strain of Clostridium botulinum producing both neurotoxin A and neurotoxin B from canned microbiotic food
Article Abstract:
Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay was utilized to detect a new strain of Clostridium botulinum producing both botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) A and BoNT B. The new strain of Clostridium botulinum was isolated from a canned macrobiotic food of commercial origin that is responsible for botulism in an elderly patient. PCR amplification of the two BoNT A and BoNT B gene fragments from the genome of the isolated Clostridium botulinum indicated the production of corresponding neurotoxic proteins.
