Characterization of the yeast transcriptome
Article Abstract:
The set of genes expressed from the yeast genome which is designated as the transcriptome, was examined by serial analysis of gene expression. The investigation of 60,633 transcripts revealed 4,665 genes with expression levels ranging from 0.3 to over 200 transcripts per cell. Only 1,981 of these genes have known functions. The integration of positional data with gene expression data permitted the construction of chromosomal expression maps identifying physical regions of transcriptional activity and identified genes that have not been predicted solely by sequence data.

Mutations of the human homolog of Drosophila patched in the nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome
Article Abstract:
The human gene sequence that controls the expression of the nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS) was isolated from a YAC and cosmid contig of the NBCCS region. The human gene sequence, designated PTC, has a strong homology to the Drosophila patched, a segment polarity gene. Analysis of the PTC showed that it is functionally similar to the patched gene, wherein reduced expression causes developmental abnormalities and suppression causes cells to transform into basal cell carcinoma forms.

Autoregulatory frameshifting in decoding mammalian ornithine decarboxylase antizyme
Article Abstract:
In vitro experiments using a fusion construct with reticulocyte lysates reveal that an autoregulatory frameshifting mechanism is responsible for the decoding of the polyamine-dependent expression of ornithine decarboxylase antizyme. The +1 frameshift takes place at the codon that precedes the terminator of the initiating frame. The mechanism does not include peptidyl-tRNA re-pairing but includes occlusion of the fourth base.
