Chromosomal dynamism in progeny of outbreak-related sorbitol-fermenting enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157:NM
Article Abstract:
Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) was successfully used to identify hemorrhagic colitis and hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) outbreaks caused by sorbitol-fermenting (SF) enterohemorrhagic colitis Escherichia coli (EHEC) O157:NM. The findings indicate that since the human body contains other prophage-inducing agents, such as H2O2 released by neutrophilis, strains with a single stx2 gene might produce large amounts of stx2 in vivo, thereby promoting their ability to cause HUS.

Transcriptional analysis of genes encoding Shiga toxin 2 and its variants in Escherichia coli
Article Abstract:
The Vero cell cytotoxicity assays, enzyme immunoassays (EIA), latex agglutination (LA), and colony immunoblot assays to characterize Shiga toxin (Stx) production in non-O157 Escherichia coli clinical isolates possess an stx(sub 2) variant as their sole stx gene. It is concluded that six of 37 non-O157 Esherichia coli strains possessing stx 2 gene variant stx(sub 2d) or stx(sub 2e) secreted no detectable Stx.

Subtypes of the plasmid-encoded serine protease EspP in Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli: Distribution, secretion, and proteolytic activity
Article Abstract:
The prevalence, distribution and structure of EspP (extracellular serine protease, plasmid encoded) in Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) are investigated. It is concluded that espP is widely distributed among STEC strains and displays genetic heterogeneity.
