Cloning and characterization of highly polymorphic porcine microsatellites
Article Abstract:
TG and TC-positive clones were determined in a size-fractionated porcine genomic library . Results show that there are 83 TG and four TC clones with repeats varying between 16 and 42 having different repetitive sequences. It was further shown that six microsatellite loci exhibited polymorphism with two to seven alleles which make them suitable as genetic markers. These results indicate that porcine microsatellites are highly polymorphic and can be used as genetic markers.

The extension coat color locus and the loci for blood group O and tyrosine aminotransferase are on pig chromosome 6
Article Abstract:
The extension coat color locus shows genetic linkage to the distal marker of pig chromosome 6, blood group O is the most distal marker on 6q and tyrosine aminotransferase is mapped to the distal part of 6p. The melanocyte-stimulating hormone receptor is encoded by the extension coat color locus. This indicates that white pigs with black spots and red pigs with black spots share the same genotype at the extension coat color locus.

The use of a wild pig X domestic pig intercross to map phenotypic trait loci
Article Abstract:
Interspecific crosses of domestic animals are a valuable resource for gene mapping, but no interspecific crosses of the domestic pig have been mapped. A hybrid of a wild pig and a Large White domestic pig has been achieved, allowing more than 230 genetic markers to be established. The traits which show the most difference between domestic and wild pigs are fatness and growth rate.
