Comparison of PCR and cell culture for detection of enteroviruses in sludge-amended field soils and determination of their transport
Article Abstract:
Sludge samples which had been contaminated with sewage for seven years were tested using PCR and cell culture methods and 21 of the 24 samples tested showed the presence of enteroviruses, though these viruses did not infect the Buffalo Green Monkey cell line used. This could be because either the viruses were inactive or that they did not infect the cells used. The PCR tests also showed that the viruses moved down and sideways in the soil probably because of the movement of the groundwater.

Detection of infectious enteroviruses by an integrated cell culture-PCR procedure
Article Abstract:
An integrated cell culture-reverse transcriptase PCR technique is useful for the quick and sensitive detection of enteroviruses. The method efficiently detects low levels of the viruses in large volumes of water. The rapidity of the technique reduces the toxicity effects that usually occur in cell cultures. This eliminates the need for subsequent purification and repeat analysis. This method should facilitate the detection of human pathogenic viruses that do not produce a cytopathic effect.
