Comparison of biomass dry weights and radial growth rates of fungal colonies on media solidified with different gelling compounds
Article Abstract:
The growth of fungal colonies on Carrageenan X-4910 gels is similar to those grown on agar, while colonies grown on Pluronic F-127 differ in growth rate and morphology. Boiling decreases the fungal biomass dry weight. The biomass densities of colonies grown on Pluronic F-127 is less, while the radial growth rates and hyphal growth unit length are more, than those grown on Carrageenan X-4910 or agar. Radial growth rate is unaffected by the presence of cellophane membranes, while biomass density decreases for some fungi.

Quantifying mold biomass on gypsum board: comparison of ergosterol and beta-N-acetylhexosaminidase as mold biomass parameters
Article Abstract:
Research compares fungal biomass measurements on agar and on gypsum plates in terms of biomass dry weight, ergosterol and beta-N-acetylhexosaminidase activity. Data indicate a linear correlation between ergosterol content and enzyme activity. Furthermeore, the biomass densities, determined from ergosterol content and enzyme activity, are similar, suggesting significantly slower growth and lower biomass density on gypsum than agar.

Minimizing ergosterol loss during preanalytical handling and shipping of samples of plant litter
Article Abstract:
Experimental results showed that decaying plant material obtained during wet periods or from streams or lakes did not exhibit ergosterol loss or gain after drying or rewetting. Microwaving and treating the wet leaves with alcohol or pentane helps in their shipment.
