Comparison of cyanopeptolin genes in Planktothrix, Microcystis, and Anabaena strains: evidence for independent evolution within each genus
Article Abstract:
The sequence of a cyanopeptolin gene cluster from the genus Planktothrix is analyzed. There is no evidence of recombination between cyanopeptolins and microcystins and there are no indications of horizontal gene transfer of cyanopeptolin gene sequences across Planktothrix, Microcystis, and Anabaena strains, supporting independent evolution within each genus.

Blakeslea tripora genes for carotene biosynthesis
Article Abstract:
The beta-carotene biosynthesis genes of Blakeslea trispora is cloned and characterized and its use in the increase of the beta-carotene production is determined. The results show that these genes are conserved across the zygomycetes and that the B. trispora carB and carRA genes are functional and potentially useable to increase carotenoid production.

Identification of genes involved in cytochrome c biogenesis in Shewanella oneidensis, using a modified mariner transposon
Article Abstract:
A modified mariner transposon, miniHimar RB1, was generated to mutagenize cells of the metal-reducing bacterium Shewanella oneidensis. It showed that the use of this transposon led to the isolation of stable mutants and allowed rapid identification of disrupted genes.
