Comparison of gas chromatography and mineralization experiments for measuring loss of selected polychlorinated biphenyl congeners in cultures of white rot fungi
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to examine the biodegradation of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners using white rot fungi. Organisms were prepared on potato dextrose agar plates while veratryl alcohol was determined into dichloromethane from aqueous NaOH. Results indicated that congener binding to the Phanerochaete chrysosporium biomass was a critical factor in the low recovery of congeners. They also showed that peroxidase levels were not directly correlated with PCB degradation.

Identification of disulfides from the biodegradation of dibenzothiophene
Article Abstract:
2-mercaptophenylglyoxylate is an intermediate in the breakdown of dibenzothiophene by Pseudomonas sp. strain BT1d via the Kodama pathway. Researchers identified three disulfides formed during the abiotic breakdown of 2-mercaptophenylglyoxylate and found the same three disulfides in the bacterium.

Purification, stability, and mineralization of 3-hydroxy-2-formylbenzothiophene, a metabolite of dibenzothiophene
Article Abstract:
3-hydroxy-2-formylbenzothiophene (HFBT) can be biodegraded by bacteria to produce 2-mercaptophenylglyoxalate and CO(sub 2). HFBT also decomposes in organic solvent, producing thioindigo and cis-thioindigo.
