Comparison of the bile salts and sodium dodecyl sulfate stress responses in Enterococcus faecalis
Article Abstract:
The adaptive resistance of the gastrointestinal bacteria Enterococcus faecalis to bile salts and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) is physiologically similar, but induces the synthesis of different proteins. Induction of 12 polypeptides is common to both stresses, but other proteins induced by bile salts stress are different from those induced by SDS stress. An exposure of the bacteria to sublethal levels of bile salts and SDS for 5 sec induces stress resistance. The resistance is unaffected by suppression of protein synthesis.

Susceptibility and adaptive response to bile salts in Propionibacterium freudenreichii: physiological and proteomic analysis
Article Abstract:
Research shows that nonadapted Propionibacterium freudenreichii cells undergo dramatic morphological changes, intracellular leakage upon bile salts challenge. Additionally, at least 24 proteins are induced during adaptation and proteomic analysis sugests that the bile salts stress response involves signal sensing and transduction. Pretreatment with bile salts confers tolerance to subsequent challenge.

Changes in protein synthesis and morphology during acid adaptation of Propionibacterium freudenreichii
Article Abstract:
Acid tolerance response in Propionibacterium freudenreichii involves an up-regulation in genetic expression of polypeptides such as a biotin carboxyl carrier protein, the GroEL and GroES chaperonins, and enzymes involved in DNA synthesis and repair. This bacterium is used as a cheese starter and a probiotic, and is exposed to acid in both uses.
