Dynamics of nitrification and denitrification in root-oxygenated sediments and adaptation of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria to low-oxygen or anoxic habitats
Article Abstract:
The oxygen releasing macrophyte, Glyceria maxima affects the nitrifying bacteria in the root zone and the ammonia oxidizing bacteria in the anoxic sediments. The numbers and activities of nitrifying bacteria show a correlation. Oxygen kinetics show that Km values for oxygen of the ammonia oxidizing species in the lake sediment are lower than the Km values from the oxic dune location. The nitrifiers have the ability to conserve their nitrifying capacity and react to presence of oxygen in oxic-anoxic environments.

Production of NO and N2O by pure cultures of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria during changes in aeration
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on the variation of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria culture aeration in relation to NO and N2O emissions. NO and N2O production were examined in the denitrifiers Pseudomonas stutzeri and Alcaligenes eutrophus and the nitrifier Nitrosomonas europaea cultured at different aeration levels. Results reveal that nitrifiers can only dominate soil NO and N2O emissions when nitrite is present.
