Constricting restricted transcription: The (actively?) shrinking web
Article Abstract:
Experiments and studies of the locus control region (LCR) implied that a direct functional interaction between the LCR and globin gene was necessary for high-level transcription. A report is presented which shows that the LCR directs the nuclear relocation of the globin locus during erythroid differentiation and directs its colocalization to specific nuclear subcomponents, providing further insight into the mechanisms of long-range transcriptional regulation and LCR function.

The locus control region is required for association of the murine beta-globin locus with engaged transcription factories during erythroid maturation
Article Abstract:
The relationship between nuclear localization and transcriptional activity of the endogenous murine beta-globin locus during erythroid differentiation was examined. The results suggested that the locus control region (LCR)-dependent association of the beta-globin locus with transcriptionally engaged polymerase II foci provided the driving force for relocalization of the locus toward the nuclear interior during erythroid maturation.

Transcription factories are nuclear subcompartments that remain in the absence of transcription
Article Abstract:
The mechanisms behind RNAPII localization and distal gene coassociation during transcription inhibition are investigated. The transcription factories are nuclear subcompartments that are not present during transcription.
