Corrosion and electrochemical oxidation of a pyrite by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans
Article Abstract:
Electrochemical studies using pyrite and platinum electrodes have identified the four steps involved inthe oxidation of pyrite by Thiobacillus ferooxidans. Each step was characterized and then analyzed in terms of their relationship to the chemical, physical and bacterial parameters involved in the bioleaching process. Steps I and II are evolution stages that depend on superficial phenomena while step IIIis regulated by ferric ions. The last step appears to be controlled by the crystalline structure.

Solid-phase products of bacterial oxidation of arsenical pyrite
Article Abstract:
Precipitates of two bacterial leaching systems containing pyrite and arsenical pyrite as substrates were collected and characterized. Iron and arsenic were both solubilized during the leaching process, and they were distributed in both solution-phase and solid-phase products. X-ray diffraction analysis of the leaching precipitates led to the identification of two minerals, scorodite and jarosite, which were formed upon pyrite solubilization.

Mineral products of pyrrhotite oxidation by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans
Article Abstract:
The oxidation process is characterized and mineral weathering products are identified by the study of the biological leaching of pyrrhotite (Fe1-xS) by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. An initial phase of acid consumption and decrease in redox potential followed by an acid producing phase and an increase in redox potential indicates that the process is biphasic. K-jarosite, geothite and schwertmannite are the solid products yielded.
