DNA sequence variation at the period locus within and among species of the Drosophila melanogaster complex
Article Abstract:
A region spanning 1.9 kilobases in the period locus of Drosophila melanogaster, D. simulans, D. mauritiana and D. sechellia was sequenced to determine intraspecific and interspecific variations. Genealogical analysis performed on 174 polymorphic sites revealed that D. simulans could be the parent species of both D. mauritiana and D. sechellia. D. mauritiana exhibits a large number of polymorphisms while D. sechellia exhibit relatively little variation. The low genetic variability of D. sechellia is attributed to genetic hitchhiking and unidirectional selection in the locus.

A genetic analysis of the stoned locus and its interaction with dunce, shibire and Suppressor of stoned variants of Drosophila melanogaster
Article Abstract:
The complementation analysis of lethal and behavioral alleles at the stoned locus was discussed. Results showed that stoned is essential in the nervous system or both the nervous and musculature but not gross neural development. The behavioral alleles, stn(sub C) and stn (sub ts), showed functional roles in the motor coordination and the visual system. In addition, genetic studies indicated the interaction of the stoned gene products with neural cAMP second messenger system, with biogenic amine metabolism and with the synaptic membrane recycling pathway through dynamin.

Developmental arrest and ecdysteroid deficiency resulting from mutations at the dre4 locus of Drosophila
Article Abstract:
The role of Drosophila melanogaster gene dre4 in the regulation of ecdystroid levels during pupariation was investigated. The results showed that dre4 is required in regulating ecdysteroid levels at multiple stages of larval, pupal and pharate adult development. The results also showed that the dre4 gene product is expressed in cells of the larval prothoracic gland. This expression is required for steroidogenesis.
