Anaerobic conversion of lactic acid to acetic acid and 1,2-propanediol by Lactobacillus buchneri
Article Abstract:
Conditions are presented for anaerobic conversion in Lactobacillus buchneri, which can produce lactic acid degradation in an anoxic environment without the use of an external electron acceptor. Findings indicate that this pH dependent function may be important to maintaining cell viability, although cell growth was not supported.

Isolation of Alcaligenes sp. strain L6 at low oxygen concentrations and degradation of 3-chlorobenzoate via a pathway not involving (chloro)catechols
Article Abstract:
The Alcaligenes sp. strain L6 degrades 3-chlorobenzoate (3CBA) via the gentisate and protocatechuate pathways rather than the (chloro)catechol pathway. The aerobic bacteria grow under conditions of reduced oxygen partial pressures. The cells grown on 3CBA oxidize all the intermediates of the gentisate and protocatechuate pathways. The pathways are activated simultaneously but only one is used to degrade 3CBA. The bacteria do not use catechol for growth, do not respire catechol when grown on 3CB or show catechol dioxygenase activity.

Degradation of 3-chlorobenzoate under low-oxygen conditions in pure and mixed cultures of the anoxygenic photoheterotroph Rhodopseudomonas palustris DCP3 and an aerobic Alcaligenes species
Article Abstract:
The degradation of 3-chlorobenzoate (3CBA) under low-oxygen conditions in pure and mixed cultures of Rhodopseudomonas palustris DCP3 and Alcaligenes sp. strain L6 was studied. The former is an anoxygenic photoheterotrophic bacterium while the latter is an aerobic bacterium. Results reveal that the anaerobic metabolism of 3CBA is oxygen tolerant up to a concentration of 3 microM O2. The simultaneous oxidation of a carbon source allowed for the anaerobic degradation of 3CBA at oxygen input levels but leads to inhibition of light-dependent dehalogenation in the absence of an additional compound.
