Detection of Salmonella spp. and Listeria monocytogenes in suspended organic waste by nucleic acid extraction and PCR
Article Abstract:
The bacterial pathogens Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella spp are detected in biological waste using a nucleic acid-based approach. Results show that the detection limits are less than 10 cells per ml of biological waste. The proposed technique does not require a phenol extraction step and can easily be implemented in one to two days. Hence, the detection method significantly reduces the time needed to extract DNA compared with the classic methods used for Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella spp.

Development and application of real-time PCR assays for quantification of gene encoding tetracycline resistance
Article Abstract:
Real-time PCR assays are validated that could be used to accurately quantify the abundance of three different tet gene groups present in manure, compost, lagoon and bioreactor samples. Results suggest that the lagoon storage and treatment might have little effect on substantial impact on the persistence and dissemination of tet genes in agricultural environments.
