Distortion of allele frequency distributions provides a test for recent population bottlenecks
Article Abstract:
Empirical data and computer simulations can be used to illustrate and assess a qualitative graphical method for identifying allele populations that have recently been bottlenecked. The expected distribution of allele frequencies for neutral loci in a nonbottlenecked population was established, and it was shown that the expected proportion of alleles at low and intermediate frequencies will change with the mutation rate and the model of mutation at a particular locus. It was established that population bottlenecks lead to a characteristic mode-shift distortion in the distribution of allele frequencies at selectively neutral loci.

High levels of gene flow in bur oak revealed by paternity analysis using microsatellites
Article Abstract:
Pollen dispersal in a stand of 62 adult bur oaks in northern Illinois was characterized using microsatellite analysis. The analysis showed that 57% of the acorns were pollinated by trees outside the stand. Pollen donors for two of the three maternal trees were randomly dispersed throughout the stand. The average pollination distance for within-stand pollinations was 75 m. The results showed direct evidences for high levels of long-distance gene flow in a wind-pollinated species.
