Diversity and function of Chloroflexus-like bacteria in a hypersaline microbial mat: Phylogenetic characterization and impact on aerobic respiration
Article Abstract:
The diversity of Chloroflexus-like bacteria (CLB) in a hypersaline phototrophic microbial mat was studied along with their near-infrared (NIR) light-dependent oxygen respiration rates. The study shows that CLB plays an important role in the cycling of carbon in the hypersaline microbial mat ecosystem and the clone library retrieved 10 of 49 sequences that are grouped in the family Chloroflexaceae.

Dominant microbial populations in limestone-corroding stream biofilms, Frasassi cave system, Italy
Article Abstract:
The molecular phylogeny and population structure of perennially abundant white microbial films sampled from two cave streams over a 4-year period is reported. The abundance and phylogenetic diversity of sulfate- and sulfur-reducing bacteria in Frasassi stream biofilms shows that they are locus of intensive Sulfur-cycling within the cave system.

Physiological adaptation of a nitrate-storing Beggiatoa sp. to diel cycling in a phototrophic hypersaline mat
Article Abstract:
The vertical diel migration and the accompanying physiology of Beggiatoa bacteria from hypersaline microbial mats are examined. The analysis has shown that nitrate storage by Beggiotoa is an optimal strategy to both occupy the suboxic zones in sulfidic sediments and survive the dark periods in phototrophic mats.
