Dynamics of the pseudolysogenic response in slowly growing cells of Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Article Abstract:
The pseudolysogenic response in Pseudomonas aeroginosa cells growing under critical states of starvation was examined using continuous culture methods. The hydraulic turnover times of the chemostat culture were prolonged and the carbon availability in the growth medium was lowered to produced the starvation states. Results showed that the nutrition concentration available to the host significantly affects the pseudolysogenic states. It was also shown that the effects of overall nutrient concentration time were more severe than the changes in the generation time of the host.

recA-dependence of the response of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to UVA and UVB irradiation
Article Abstract:
The effects of UV radiation on the autochthonous soil and aquatic bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa were studied. P. aeruginosa recA mutants were more sensitive to UV radiation than their isogenic RecA+ parents. The amount of RecA protein doubled 120 minutes after exposure to UV radiation which indicates that expression of the recA gene was induced by the radiation. A functional RecA protein was found to be a requisite in the activation of D3 prophage in lysogenic cells after exposure to UV radiation.

The role of pseudolysogeny in bacteriophage-host interactions in a natural freshwater environment
Article Abstract:
Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 and PAO303 strains were isolated and analyzed from a natural fresh water source to determine bacteriophage-host interactions under environmentally relevant conditions of nutrient limitation. Results indicate the importance of pseudolysogeny in the maintenance of viral genetic material for extended period of time in natural ecosystems. The long-term survival of viruses in unfavorable environments can be attributed to the pseudolysogenic state.
