Effect of compatible solutes on survival of lactic acid bacteria subjected to drying
Article Abstract:
The presence of compatible solutes such as betaine increases the chances of survival of lactic acid bacteria exposed to drying. Betaine accumulates in considerable amounts in the bacteria present in a salt-stressed media and subjected to drying. Betaine protects Lactobacillus plantarum, L. halotolerans, and Enterococcus faecium from drying. However, L. bulgaricus is unable to survive drying as it does not accumulate betaine. Betaine has no effect on survival of bacteria in media which are not salt stressed.

Effect of organic solvents on the yield of solvent-tolerant Pseudomonas putida S12
Article Abstract:
The effects of organic solvents on the growth of solvent-tolerant microorganisms were analyzed using Pseudomonas putida S12. The maximal growth of P. putida was not affected by toluene in batch cultures. In chemostat cultures, the solvent decreased the maximal growth rate by nearly 50%. Toluene, ethylbenzene, propylbenzene, xylene, hexane and cyclohexane reduced the biomass yield. This effect depended on the concentration of the solvent in the bacterial membrane and not on its chemical structure.

Metabolism of tetralin (1,2,3,4-tetrahydronapthalene) in Corynebacterium sp.strain C125
Article Abstract:
The catabolism of tetralin in Corynebacterium sp. strain C125 is discused. Microorganic strains were subjected to growth studies, oxygen consumption experiments, polarographical assaying, incubation experiments, chemical analysis and mass spectrum analysis. Carboxylic acid-substituted cyclohexanone was formed by the resulting hydrolytic attack on the ring fissionproduct.
