Effect of oxygen, inoculum composition and flow rate on development of mixed-culture oral biofilms
Article Abstract:
Previous research has shown that mixed cultures of oral bacteria generated from inocula of either defined or undefined composition can be grown in chemostats. In the case of bacteria in biofilms, they fail to reflect the development of dental plaque and do not allow the study of succession events because of the rapid colonization of hydroxyapatite surfaces by anaerobes. To remedy this problem, a two-stage model chemostat system is developed to study the impact of oxygen and culture composition on the development of planktonic and biofilm bacteria.

Microbial biofilm formation and contamination of dental-unit water systems in general dental practice
Article Abstract:
Most of the dental water lines in dental offices exceed the maximum number of bacteria allowable in drinking water. Analysis of water samples from 55 dental offices in England showed that 95% failed to meet European Union drinking water standards and 83% failed to meet American Dental Association standards for dental water lines.

Depth penetration and detection of pH gradients in biofilms by two-photon excitation microscopy
Article Abstract:
Two-photon excitation microscopy (TPE) can be used to visualize deep microbial biofilms. This was the conclusion of researchers who compared TPE to conventional confocal laser scanning microscopy. TPE recorded images four times deeper with greater resolution and no loss of contrast.
