Effects of a lignin peroxidase-expressing recombinant Streptomyces lividans TK23.1, on biochemical cycling and the numbers and activities of microorganismsin soil
Article Abstract:
An assessment of the effects of environmental release of lignin peroxidase- overexpressing genetically engineered microorganisms (GEMS) and other GEMS in soils is discussed. A recombitant Streptomyces lividans TK23.1 was discharged into soil in flask- andmicrocosm-scale studies. Three independent laboratories were used for differentparts of the research. Results show that the release of the strain into soil significantly affected some environmental parameters. However, these effects were found to be ecologically insignificant.

A new solid medium for enumerating cellulose-utilizing bacteria in soil
Article Abstract:
A solid medium containing Congo red, Nobel agar and gelatin is useful in determining the number of cellulose digesting bacteria. The bacterial colonies which use cellulose form clear zones around themselves which can be easily counted even without the use of carbohydrate precipitates such as hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide. Bacteria which used cellulose and those which did not as well as fungi that used cellulose were grown on this medium to test its effectiveness.

Characterization of Streptomyces lydicus WYEC108 as a potential biocontrol agent against fungal root and seed rots
Article Abstract:
Streptomyces lydicus WYEC108 can inhibit the growth of the fungi Pythium ultimum and Rhizoctonia solani and can stably colonize roots emerging from pea and cotton seeds. WYEC108 coating of pea seeds reduced P. ultimum infection from 100% to under 40% of the seeds after 48 hours. The interaction between WYEC108 and P. ultimum was examined using scanning electron microscopy, revealing damage to both the oospores and the hyphae of P. ultimum.
