Effects of surfactant mixtures, including Corexit 9527, on bacterial oxidation of acetate and alkanes in crude oil
Article Abstract:
The effects of mixtures of anionic and nonionic surfactants, including Corexit 9527, on bacterial oxidation of alkanes and acetate present in crude oil have been investigated. Surfactant mixtures such as oil spill dispersant mixtures were compared with the individual components of the mixtures. Results show that Corexit 9527 limited the oxidation of the alkanes in crude oil by Acinetobacter calcoaceticus ATCC 31012 while its constituent Span 80 significantly boosted the oil oxidation rate. In contrast, another Corexit 9527 constituent, the negatively charged dioctyl sulfosuccinate, markedly diminished the oxidation rate.

Anhydrobiotic engineering of gram-negative bacteria
Article Abstract:
Research demonstrates that bacterial cell viability can be preserved over long-term periods in a dry state by anhydrobiosis. Results demonstrate that Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas putida cells are preserved anydrobiotically by inducing intracellular synthesis of trehalose followed by drying the cells.

Endogenously synthesized (-)-proto-quercitol and glycine betaine are principal compatible solutes of Schizochytrium sp. strain S8 (ATCC 20889) and three new isolates of phylogenetically related thraustochytrids
Article Abstract:
A report on the endogenously synthesized (-)-proto-quercitol and glycine betaine that are the principal compatible solutes of Schizochytrium sp. strain S8 (ATCC 20889) and three new osmotolerant isolates of thraustochytrids (strains T65, T66, T67) is presented.
