Effects of endogenous substrates on adaption of anaerobic microbial communities to 3-chlorobenzoate
Article Abstract:
The adaptation period preceding the biodegradation of 3-chlorobenzoate in anaerobic communities derived from lake sediment and wastewater sludge digesters is characterized. It is observed that the adaptation to 3-chlorobenzoate was more rapid in digester samples, when compared to the samples that contained high levels of these biodegradable compounds.

Reductive dehalogenation and conversion of 2-chlorophenol to 3-chlorobenzoate in a methanogenic sediment community: implications for predicting the environmental fate of chlorinated pollutants
Article Abstract:
Research is conducted on the initiation of chlorinated compounds biotransformation by reductive dehalogenation in a methanogenic sediment community. Results indicate that transformation of 2-chlorophenol to another compound is not acceptable if the product is not further degraded.

Successional changes in an evolving anaerobic chlorophenol-degrading community used to infer relationships between population structure and system-level processes
Article Abstract:
Syntrophic and methanogenic bacteria are as important as dehalogenating bacteria in the biodegradation of chlorinated aromatic compounds. This was the conclusion of researchers who measured bacterial succession in soil bacteria upon the introduction of 2-chlorophenol.
