Effects of low dissolved-oxygen concentrations on poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) production by Alcaligenes eutrophus
Article Abstract:
A method for the synthesis of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) was developed by utilizing Alcaligenes eutrophus for fed-batch fermentation with glucose and sodium propionate. The synthetic method involves the imposition of concurrent nitrogen limitation and low dissolved-oxygen concentrations during the copolymer accumulation phase of Alcaligenes eutrophus strain DSM 545 in fed-batch fermentation. The low-dissolved oxygen concentration fermentations exhibited lower overall production of poly-beta-hydroxyalkanoates and lower copolymer productivities.

Structural gene (nirS) for the cytochrome cd(sub 1) nitrite reductase of Alcaligenes eutrophus H16
Article Abstract:
The gene encoding nitrite reductase (nirS) in Alcaligenes eutrophus H16 is present on chromosomal DNA. The product of nirS gene is homologous to the periplasmic nitrite reductases of the cytochrome cd(sub 1)-type heme. A disruption in nirS destroys the nitrite-reducing ability of the enzyme. This indicates that NirS enzyme is essential for denitrification in A. eutrophus. The denitrification by A. eutrophus is genetically associated to the megaplasmid pHG1.

Construction and characterization of heavy metal-resistant haloaromatic-degrading Alcaligenes eutrophus strains
Article Abstract:
The utilization of intraspecific conjugation for obtaining Alcaligenes eutrophus strains exhibiting plasmid-borne heavy metal resistance and haloaromatic degrading functions is discussed. Catabolic and resistance markers were expressed by the construction of the strains. The strains were found to be useful for the decontamination of organic compounds and heavy metal polluted sites.
