Enhanced exopolymer production and chromium stabilization in Pseudomonas putida unsaturated biofilms
Article Abstract:
A study is conducted to quantify changes in the macromolecular composition of cellular and extracellular polymeric substances fractions of unsaturated Pseudomonas putida mt-2 biofilms exposed to iron and Cr to relate such changes to Cr fates in the soil environment. The results show that Cr accumulation in unsaturated biofilms occurs with enzymatic reduction of Cr(VI), cellular lysis, cellular association, and extracellular DNA binding of Cr(III), which altogether could facilitate localized biotic stabilization of Cr in contaminated vadose zones.

Diversity, composition, and geographical distribution of microbial communities in California salt marsh sediments
Article Abstract:
The effects of environmental and pollutant variables on microbial communities in salt marshes along the California coastline are characterized by using phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis and terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (TRFLP) analysis. The strong relationships observed between pollutant concentrations and some microbial indicators have shown the potential for using microbial community analyses in assessments of the ecosystem health of salt marshes.

Plutonium(IV) reduction by the metal-reducing bacteria Geobacter metallireducens GS15 and Shewanella oneidensis MR1
Article Abstract:
The investigation of the ability of the metal-reducing bacteria Geobacter metallireducens GS15 and Shewanella oneidensis MR1 to enzymatically reduce freshly precipitated amorphous Pu(IV) [(OH).sub.4] [Pu(IV)[(OH).sub.4(am)]] and soluble Pu(IV)(EDTA) is presented. It is revealed that strongly reducing environment where complexing ligands are present might produce soluble forms of reduced Pu species.
