Erasure of histone acetylation by Arabidopsis HDA6 mediates large-scale gene silencing in nucleolar dominance
Article Abstract:
The silencing of one parental set of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes in a genetic hybrid is described by nucleolar dominance and it was revealed that the Arabidopsis histone deacetylase, HDA6, is required for gene silencing in nucleolar dominance. The purified HDA6 deacetylase lysines modified by histone acetylttransferases and localizes, in part, to the nucleolus whereby it erases histone acetylation as a key step in an epigenetic switch mechanism that silences rRNA genes through concerted histone and DNA modifications.

Nucleolar dominance: A model for rRNA gene silencing
Article Abstract:
A powerful model is provided by nuclear dominance for analyzing dosage compensation by biochemical approaches, since the rRNA genes and transcripts form each species can be distinguished and rRNA can be used for silencing NOR. Nucleolar dominance is development observed in cells of interspecific hybrids in which nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) derived from one parental species are dominant over the other.

Recruitment of factors linking transcription and processing of pre-rRNA to NOR chromatin is UBF-dependent and occurs independent of transcription in human cells
Article Abstract:
The human orthologs of t-UTPs is characterized to demonstrate their involvement in both transcription and U3 snoRNA-dependent pre-rRNA processing. Results highlight the importance of the specialized chromatin structure associated with extensive upstream binding factor (UBF) binding in coordinating ribosome biogenesis.
