Fermentation and sulfur reduction in the mat-building cyanobacterium Microcoleus chthonoplastes
Article Abstract:
Experiments are performed to study the fermentation and sulfur reduction in the mat-building cyanobacterium Microcoleus chthonoplastes. The bacterium is investigated for its enzymatic and incubation activities. Results show that M. chtonoplastes initiates a mixed-acid fermentation when incubated under anoxic conditions in the dark. This finding suggests that glucose derived from glycogen and glucosyl-glycerol is degraded via the Embden-Meyerhof-Parnas pathway.

On-line monitoring of nitrogenase activity in cyanobacteria by sensitive laser photoacoustic detection of ethylene
Article Abstract:
A sensitive method in the detection of nitrogenase activity in cyanobacteria is presented. The method is based on sensitive laser photoacoustic (LPA) detection of the ethylene produced in the reduction of acetylene by nitrogenase. Ethylene has a strong and unique absorption pattern in the carbon dioxide laser wavelength region. The LPA method of ethylene determination is faster and more sensitive compared to gas chromatography.

Modeling the dynamic regulation of nitrogen fixation in the cyanobacterium Trichodesmium sp
Article Abstract:
A physiological, unbalanced model involving the dynamics of intracellular reserves of carbon and nitrogen is presented that describes growth of the marine cyanobacterium Trichdesmium sp. at the expense of [N.sub.2] (diazotropy). The model has indicated that carbon availability is a simple and efficient mechanism to regulate the balance of carbon and nitrogen fixed (C/N ratio) in filaments of cells.
