Evidence for paternal transmission and heteroplasmy in the mitochondrial genome of Silene vulgaris, a gynodioecious plant
Article Abstract:
The inheritance of the mitochondrial genes atpA and coxl is studied in 318 Silene vulgaris individuals distributed among 23 crosses. The distribution of shared nucleotide sequence polymorphism among atpA haplotypes and the results of a population survey of the joint distribution of atpA and coxl haplotypes across individuals supports the hypothesis that heteroplasmy facilitates formation of novel mitochondrial genotypes by recombination.

Guilt by multiple association
Article Abstract:
New approaches in computational comparative genomics make use of the additional information in evolutionary associations to infer co-dependencies between genes, which may imply that they interact functionally. This type of reasoning makes use of genomic sequence data, and are applied to nonhomologous gene that share an evolutionary association.
