Evidence of female heterogametic genetic sex determination in white sturgeon
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze the basic mechanism of sex determination in the white sturgeon, Acipenser trnsmontanus Richardson. Ploidy manipulation methods were utilized to generate gynogenetic and polyploid individuals. The sex ratios present in the groups of fish were also examined. In addition, the gonads of the fish were sexually differentiated. Results indicated the importance of knowing the basic sex determination mechanism in a threatened sturgeon and other kinds of fish species when analyzing the use of sperm cryopreservation for species conservation.

An introduction to mammalian interspecific hybrids
Article Abstract:
Haldine's law on interspecies hybrids states that the heterogametic sex is likely to be sterile, rare or absent. There is increasing evidence in mammals that the cause could be the high mutation rate of the Y chromosome's male sex-determining gene. Continuing study of mammalian hybrids, combined with new technological methods, could lead to new hybrids of economic importance, similar to humanity's first genetic engineering contribution, the mule.
