Evolution of the korA-oriV segment of promiscuous IncP plasmids
Article Abstract:
The replication and transfer of plasmids in Escherichia coli is governed by a nucleotide sequence, IncP(alpha) found in between the regulatory gene korA and the gene for vegetative replication. Comparisons of this region were made with a similar plasmid in a different strain of E. coli from incompatibility group P. The IncP(alpha) gene contains several operons that are not found in the other gene, and it also does not contain strong transcriptional terminator sequences.

Flux in the horizontal gene pool
Article Abstract:
The 3rd Workshop of the European Science Foundation Network on Molecular Biology and Ecology of Plasmid-Mediated Gene Spread held in Cuenca, Spain focused on various topics regarding bacterial genomes. These include the role of mobile genetic elements in the rapid evolution of bacterial populations, plasmids derived from Gram-positive bacteria and the prevalence of conjugative transposons in Gram-negative bacteria.

Will there be 50 more years of bacterial genetics?
Article Abstract:
Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory hosted a meeting of top geneticists in celebration of 50 years of bacterial and bacteriophage genetics. Many of the pioneers of bacterial genetics reminisced about their work during the laboratory's early days. Whole sessions at the meeting were devoted to discussing the bacterial genome, recombination, mutagenesis and gene expression and regulation.
