Fluorescence in situ hybridization-flow cytometry-cell sorting-based method for separation and enrichment of type I and type II metanotroph populations
Article Abstract:
Fluorescence in situ hybridization-flow cytometry (FISH/FC)-based method was optimized using artificial mixtures of pure cultures of methanotrophic bacteria. Traditional oligonucleotide probes targeting 16S rRNAs of type I (MG84/705) probe and type II (MA450 probe) methanotrophs were labeled with fluorescein or Alexa fluor and used for FISH, followed by fluorescence-activated FC analysis and cell sorting (FACS).

Bacterial populations active in metabolism of C1 compounds in the sediment of lake Washington, a freshwater lake
Article Abstract:
The use of a combination of two-culture-independent molecular techniques (RT-PCR and SIP of DNA) to identify active bacterial populations involved in utilization of C1 compounds in the sediment of Lake Washington, a freshwater lake is described. The diversity of 16S rRNA in library reflected to high level of complexity of the active microbial community in the sediment.

Elucidation of a carotenoid biosynthesis gene cluster encoding a novel enzyme, 2,2'-beta-hydroxylase, from Brevundimonas sp. strain SD212 and combinatorial biosynthesis of new or rare xanthophylls
Article Abstract:
A carotenoid biosynthesis gene cluster mediating the production of 2-hydroxyastaxanthin was studied when isolated from the marine bacterium Brevundimonas sp. strain SD212 by using a common gene (crtI) sequence. It produced a new carotenoid which has a strong inhibitory effect on lipid peroxidation.
