Functional exoenzymes as indicators of metabolically active bacteria in 124,000-year-old sapropel layers of the eastern Mediterranean Sea
Article Abstract:
Research has been conducted on the hydrolytic enzymes that act as metabolically active bacteria indicators. The analysis of these enzymes in sapropel layers that have been collected from bathyal sediments is discussed.

Microbial communities in the chemocline of a hypersaline deep-sea basin (Urania Basin, Mediterranian Sea)
Article Abstract:
The microbial community existing in the mediterranean Urania Basin at the interface between the hypersaline basin and the seawater is different than the communities at other chemoclines. The Urania Basin is a hypersaline sulfidic lake at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea south of Greece.

Analysis of subfossil molecular remains of purple sulfur bacteria in a lake sediment
Article Abstract:
The presence of intact ancient DNA is a sulfide-rich sediment was investigate to look for 16S rRNA gene sequences of Chromatiaceae found in the subfossil sediment layers of Mahoney Lake, British Columbia, Canada. The carotenoid okenone and bacteriophaeophytin a were found in sediments up to 11,000 years old. Okenone is specific only for a few species of Chromatiaceae, including Amoebobacter purpureus, which is the major type of bacteria found in the lake. Degradation rates were found to be substantially higher for genomic DNA than for hydrocarbon cell constituents.
