Gene expression in the cos region of the Streptomyces temperate actinophage phi-C31
Article Abstract:
A transcription map based on RNA made in induced and uninduced cultures of Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2) provides a basis for studying gene expression in the cos region of the S. actinophage phi-C31. RNA synthesis occurs late in the lytic cycle in induced cultures. The late-expressed transcripts have four ORFs and a tRNA(super Thr)-like gene. One of the four ORFs may encode a lysis protein and one probably takes part in DNA maturation. Transcription mapping of RNA from uninduced cultures indicates a 620 nt transcript, xRNA1. The gene is expressed from right to left in phi-C31.

A Mycobacterium tuberculosis operon encoding ESAT-6 and a novel low-molecular-mass culture filtrate protein (CFP-10)
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to identify and characterize the promoter region of early secreted antigenic target 6 kDa protein (ESAT-6) as a first step in elucidating the process that controls its expression and antigenicity. It was observed that esat-6 was cotranscribed with lhp, a novel gene that encodes a low-molecular-mass protein in the Mycobacterium tuberculosis short-term culture filtrates. Results indicate that specific transcription factor(s) may be required for the correct expression of lhp/esat-6 in M tuberculosis.

Expression of two alternative sigma factors of Synechococcus sp. strain PCC 7002 is modulated by carbon and nitrogen stress
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on the cloning and characterization of the sigB and sigC genes, encoding two alternative sigma factors of the unicellular marine cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp PCC 7002. There was a decrease in the ratio of the principal vegetative sigma factor, SigA, to SigB during nitrogen starvation or carbon starvation. The findings suggest that SigB and SigC are important in modifying transcription in response to changes in carbon and nitrogen availability in cyanobacterium.
