Generation of coated intermediates of clathrin-mediated endocytosis of protein-free liposomes
Article Abstract:
Clathrin-coated buds and dynamin-coated tubules morphologically similar to corresponding structures observed in synaptic membranes can be generated on protein-free liposomes by incubation with cytosol, or with clathrin coat proteins and purified dynamin. Dynamin- and clathrin-coated intermediates may form independently of each other despite the coupling between the two processes. Formation of both structures on liposomes can occur in the absence of nucleotides. These suggest that interfaces between lipids and cytosolic proteins can deform lipid bilayers into buds and tubules.

Ligands for clathrin-mediated endocytosis are differentially sorted into distinct populations of early endosomes
Article Abstract:
A sorting mechanism that takes place prior to early endosome entry is discovered, using live-cell imaging to monitor individual endosomes and ligand particles in real time. It is shown that early endosomes are in fact comprised of two distinct populations, a dynamic population that is highly mobile on microtubules and matures rapidly toward late endosomes and a static population that matures much more slowly.

A modular design for the clathrin- and actin-mediated endocytosis machinery
Article Abstract:
Evidence for four protein modules that cooperated to drive coat formation, membrane invagination, actin-meshwork assembly, and vesicle scission during clathrin/actin-mediated endocytosis was provided in the study. Clathrin facilitated the initiation of endocytic-site assembly but was not needed for membrane invagination or vesicle formation.
