Targeting of aberrant mRNAs to cytoplasmic processing bodies
Article Abstract:
An attempt is made to demonstrate that nonsense-mediated decay (NMD) in yeast targets premature termination codon (PTC)-containing messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) to P-bodies. Results suggest that UPf1 protein also targets normal mRNAs to P-bodies and that normal and NMD substrates may be distinguished by a two-step sequential process, which would be expected to increase the accuracy of the NMD selection process.

A disulfide relay system in mitochondria
Article Abstract:
A disulfide relay system, which promotes the import and oxidative folding of proteins, is present in the intermembrane space (IMS) of mitochondria that is comprised of the proteins Mia40 and Erv1. The molecular function of Mia40 is clarified and it is revealed that Mia40 is the first physiological substrate for the FAD-linked Erv1.

A mitochondrial protein, Bit1, mediates apoptosis regulated by integrins and Groucho/TLE corepressors
Article Abstract:
Bit1, a mitochondrial protein that is released into the cytoplasm during apoptosis is identified in searching for proteins involved in cell adhesion-dependent regulation of anoikis. Cytoplasmic Bit1 forms a complex with AES and induces cell death with characteristics of caspase-independent apoptosis.
