Genetic characterization of the Mutator system in maize: behavior and regulation of Mu transposons in a minimal line
Article Abstract:
The characterization of mutator system in Maize reveal that the several different types of Mu transposons constitute the mutator lines of Maize. The mutator regulatory element occurs in a high copy number and causes the inheritance of the mutator activity in non-Mendelian way. The MuDR-1, a regulator of the Mutator system, is capable of replacing the standard non-Mendelian Mutator activity, as it is associated with the methylation of the Mu transposon termini.

Maize mutants and variants altering developmental time and their heterochronic interactions
Article Abstract:
Maize mutant genes controlling shoot stage-transition that prolong basal segment characteristics into the distal segments interact with early-flowering maize variants that abbreviate the juvenile characteristics of vegetative segments to produce a great variety of phenotypes, including monstrous types. This observation can be used to explain macroevolution in terms of heterochrony and without having to invoke changes at the deoxyribonucleic acid level.

The maize gene liguless2 encodes basic leucine zipper protein involved in the establishment of the leaf blade-sheath boundary
Article Abstract:
A study of liguleless2-reference (lg2-R) mutant plants establishes the key role it plays in defining the blade-sheath boundary in maize leaves. The mutants shows signs of being affected even before the ligule and auricle formation. LG2 mRNA accumulation precedes the accumulation of liguleless1-reference. The phenotype of lg2-R is cell-nonautonomous.
