Genetic differentiation within and between natural populations of perennial and annual ryegrass (Lolium perenne and L. rigidum)
Article Abstract:
Starch gel electrophoresis was used to study genetic structure of 120 wild populations of Lolium perenne and 50 of L. rigidum. For both, most diversity seems to be within populations, but significant patterns of geographical variation for diversity indices and allele frequencies exist in L. perenne and the three genetic indices had the same variation trend. Genetic diversity is significantly higher in L. rigidum than in L. perenne. Lolium perenne may come from a small bottleneck of L. rigidum populations of the Middle East.

The evolutionary ecology of the major histocompatibility complex
Article Abstract:
The contribution of studies on the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) in non-model species is reviewed to understand the effect of ecological and ethological processes on the tempo and mode of evolution at the MHC. It is indicated that positive selection operates on MHC loci to maintain MHC variation.
