Genetic diversity of viable, injured, and dead fecal bacteria assessed by fluorescence-activated cell sorting and 16S rRNA gene analysis
Article Abstract:
A new approach combining a flow cytometric in situ viability assessment with 16S rRNA gene analysis was developed to obtain insight into the genetic diversity and activity of the fecal microbiota. Phylogenetic analysis of the live, dead and injured cells revealed a remarkable physiological heterogeneity within the bacterial populations, Bifidobacterium longum and B. infantis were retrieved from all sorted fractions, while B. adolescentis was recovered mostly from the sorted dead fraction.

Metaproteomics approach to study the functionality of the microbiota in the human infant gastrointestinal tract
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to investigate the potential use of metaproteomics approach comprising of two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight for characterization of the human fecal microbiota. The findings reveal that metaproteomics approaches might become a useful tool to monitor the functional products of the microbiota in feces over time as affected by dietary intervention, length, life, health, and disease.

Quantitative detection of the free-living amoeba 'Hartmannella vermiformis' in surface water by using real-time PCR
Article Abstract:
'Hartmannella vermiformis' is a free-living amoeba that is a potential host for 'Legionella pneumophila' in warm water systems and cooling towers. The development of a real-time PCR-based method targeting the 18S rRNA gene for the quantitative detection of this amoeba is described.
