Genetically modified ruminal bacteria protect sheep from fluoroacetate poisoning
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to develop genetically modified ruminal bacteria that will provide protection against fluoroacetate poisoning. Four Merino/Border-Leicester crossbred sheep were used for trial I while six pure-bred Merino sheep were used for trial II. Recombinant bacteria were developed in ruminal fluid medium containing yeast extract instead of peptone. Results demonstrate the protective effect of the modified bacteria upon host animals.

Isolation of endophytic Streptomyces strains from surface-sterilized roots
Article Abstract:
Exploratory research on the presence of actinomycetes in surface-sterilized roots was performed. There were 28 plant species used, and the roots of all species were found to harbor actinomyces. Most of the 499 actinomycetes isolated were Streptococcus strains. Streptomycete hyphal growth inside the cortical cells was revealed by scanning electron microscopy. These growths were surrounded or partially coated by a mucilaginous layer.

Isolation of an aldehyde dehydrogenase involved in the oxidation of fluoroacetaldehyde to fluoroacetate in Streptomyces cattleya
Article Abstract:
Researchers report the first known bacterial enzyme that is involved in fluorometabolite synthesis. It is an NAD+-dependent fluoroacetaldehyde dehydrogenase from Streptomyces cattleya that oxidizes fluoroacetaldehyde to fluoroacetate.
