Genetics of reproductive isolation in the Drosophila simulans clade: DNA marker-assisted mapping and characterization of a hybrid-male sterility gene, Odysseus (Ods)
Article Abstract:
The existence and characteristics of genes responsible for male sterility in Drosophila (D) hybrids was investigated by introgressing X chromosome segments obtained from D mauritiana or D sechellia into D simulans through backcrosses. Genetic and molecular analyses results revealed revealed that a major sterility factor exists in D mauritiana in the 16D cytological interval, which was designated as Odysseus. Of the total number of introgressions, 22 were found to contain 500-kb breakpoints located in this interval. The properties of Ods-induced spermatogenic defects were studied using phase-contrast microscopy.

The genetic basis of haldane's rule and the nature of asymmetric hybrid male sterility among Drosophila simulans, Drosophila mauritiana and Drosophila sechellia
Article Abstract:
The genetic basis of hybrd male sterility was studied through dissection and mapping of individual loci in autosomes, the X and Y chromosome and the cytoplasm obtained from three Drosophila species. Results revealed that the X-Y interaction hypothesis played no role in Drosophila simulans x Drosophila sechellia hybrid male sterility. Various models on symmetrical and asymmetrical X-autosome interaction explaining the findings made from y-chromosome substitution are presented. It is suggested that during the initial phases of speciation, interactions between various genetic elements evolve asymmetrically.

An empirical test of the meiotic drive models of hybrid sterility: sex-ratio data from hybrids between Drosophila simulans and Drosophila sechellia
Article Abstract:
An investigation was conducted to determine the relationship between meiotic drive and male sterility in crosses between Drosophila sechellia and D. simulans. The procedure involved the introgression of the D. sechellia Y chromosome into the D. simulans genetic background. Analysis of the sex ratio of hybrids showed no significant deviation from Mendelian predictions. These results suggest that meiotic drive is not involved in male sterility in D. sechellia - D. simulans crosses.
