Growth cones of dorsal root ganglion but not retina collapse and avoid oligodendrocytes in culture
Article Abstract:
Axons of different types of neurons respond differently to oligodendrocytes. When cultured with rat oligodendrocytes, neurons from the retina of chick embryos grew over the oligodendrocytes, but neurons from the dorsal root ganglion and sympathetic ganglia avoided the oligodendrocytes. Growth cones of dorsal root ganglion and sympathetic ganglia left behind areas free of axons around the oligodendrocytes, but this was not observed in the cultures of retinal neurons.

Decreased expression of pro-apoptotic Bcl-2 family members during retinal development and differential sensitivity to cell death
Article Abstract:
Pro-apoptotic Bcl-2 family members, which cause cell death, are found to be down regulated during retina formation in mammals and this helps in adult post-mitotic neurons protection later.
