Habitat use and time budgeting by wintering ferruginous hawks
Article Abstract:
Little is understood about the behaviour of ferruginous hawks during the winter, with few accounts of habitat use, diet or time-budgeting. A new study of the raptor was undertaken in Colorado to discover its winter ecology. It was found that around 84% of daylight hours were spent perching and that hunting frequency averaged 18 times a day. The hawk's most important prey species was the black-tailed prairie dog.
