Haplotype test reveals departure from neutrality in a segment of the white gene of Drosophila melanogaster
Article Abstract:
A study has been conducted to identify the causes of linkage disequilibria between polymorphisms in the white gene of Drosophila melanogaster populations. Molecular analysis of DNA sequence variation in a 4722-bp region of the white gene in 15 lines of D. melanogaster and one line of D. simulans, conducted using a test for high-frequency haplotypes, detected an 834-bp segment. In this region, polymorphisms formed large haplotype blocks, apparently due to the positive selection on polymorphisms within the white gene.

The hitchhiking effect on the site frequency spectrum of DNA polymorphisms
Article Abstract:
The genetic hitchhiking model predicted skewness in the case of directional selection on rare variants involving DNA sequence variation. The Tajima's D statistic gave a quantitative measure of the frequency spectrum. The statistic's expected value under the given model became large and negative with hitchhiking, indicating the model's insufficiency in explaining DNA polymorphism in restricted crossings.

Reduced levels of DNA polymorphism and fixed between-population differences in the centromeric region of Drosophila ananassae
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to examine DNA sequence variation in Drosophila ananassae populations. Six-cutter restriction site variation at vermilion (v) and furrowed (f) were applied in estimating differences in DNA sequence. The gene regions analyzed are near the centromere on the X chromosome's left and right arms. Results show that variation in patterns are influenced by genetic hitchhiking.
