Trans-silencing by P elements inserted in subtelomeric heterochromatin involves the Drosophila polycomb group gene, Enhancer of Zeste
Article Abstract:
Results of research done by Siobhan Roche and Donald C. Rio over the role of the polycomb group gene in the trans-silencing of P-element transgenes by P elements in subtelomeric heterochromatin of Drosophila cannot be reproduced. However, further experiments reveal a loss of trans-silencing in the presence of four different E(z) alleles. While it is correct that P-element enhancer traps at 1A or 100F exhibit trans-silencing it remains inconclusive that the E(z)(super 32) allele can reduce this phenomenon.

The Drosophila salivary gland chromocenter contains highly polytenized subdomains of mitotic heterochromatin
Article Abstract:
The life span and characteristics of 31 individual sites of the peri-centromeric regions of Drosophila melanogaster chromosomes during polytenization are analyzed by using P elements. The P elements are inserted sites which are spread throughout the mitotic heterochromatins. Unique or middle repetitive sequence DNAs in the mitotic heterodomain are interspersed with satellite DNAs. The Y chromosomes are less in number on the polytene DNA.

Analysis of subtelomeric heterochromatin in the Drosophila minichromosome Dp1187 by single P element insertional mutagenesis
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze heterochromatin in the Drosophila minichromosome Dp1187. The study focused on the application of single P element insertional mutagenesis for the analysis. A strong cluster was formed by the insertion of 45 P elements onto Dp1187. Heterochormatic properties were observed for DNA within and distal to the formed cluster. Results show that P elements prefer small heterochromatic sites for transposition.
