Highly divergent genes for methanopterin-linked C1 transfer reactions in Lake Washington, assessed via metagenomic analysis and mRNA detection
Article Abstract:
A metagenomic approach is used to understand the occurrence, frequency and diversity of the novel tetrahydromethanopterin-linked C1 transfer genes in Lake Washington and to provide the first glimpses into the genomes of the organisms possessing these genes. The specific mRNA detection is used to show that these divergent genes are expressed in the environment, pointing toward their potential role in local carbon cycling.

Analysis of fae and fhcD genes in Mono Lake, California
Article Abstract:
PCR amplification and analysis are used to detect genes for two enzymes of the tetrahydromethanopterin-linked C1 transfer pathway (fae and fhcD) in hypersaline, hyperalkaline Mono Lake, California. Low diversity for fae and fhcD is observed, in contrast to the diversity previously detected in a freshwater lake, Lake Washington, Washington.

Genetic characterization of the carotenoid biosynthetic pathway in Methylobacterium extroquens AM1 and isolation of a colorless mutant
Article Abstract:
The putative carotenoid biosynthesis pathway in the pink-pigmented facultative methylotroph Methylobacterium extorquens AMI was reconstructed by genomic searches. A colorless mutant was obtained by transposon mutagenesis and the insertion was shown to be in one of the putative phytoene desturase genes.
