Homoeologous chromosome pairing in the distant hybrid Alstroemeria aurea x A. inodora and the genome composition of its backcross derivatives determined by fluorescence in situ hybridization with species-specific probes
Article Abstract:
A distant hybrid of two diploid species, Alstroemeria aurea and A. inodora, has been studied relative to crossability with A. inodora, homoeologous chromosome pairing, and chromosome transmission to BC1 offspring. To study chromosome pairing in the hybrid and genome constitution of BD1 progeny, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) was used. Homoeologous crossing over of chromosomes of the parental species in the hybrid was found in all PC1 plants. Probes were species-specific. Although there was regular homoeologous chromosome pairing in 30% of the pollen mother cells, both hybrids were very sterile.

Postmeiotic restitution in 2n-egg formation of diploid potato
Article Abstract:
Postmeiotic restitution has been studied in 2n-egg formation in a diploid potato. Four diploid interspecific F1 hybrids of Solanum were tested for the types of origin of 2n-eggs. Three had 2n-eggs originating from second division restitution. Crossovers took place from one genome to the other in the two genomes of one F1 hybrid. A new way to originate 2n-eggs was found; it has been called 'postmeiotic restitution' (PMR).

Meiotic behavior of individual chromosomes in allotriploid Alstroemeria hybrids
Article Abstract:
Chromosomes of parental species are studied. The implications of the absence of homoeologous chromosome pairing on gamete constitution and prospects for introgression in Alstroemeria are discussed.
