How to get ahead: The origin, evolution and function of bicoid
Article Abstract:
The existing understanding of how a gradient of bicoid (Bcd) protein regulates gene expression along the anteroposterior axis of the Drosophila embryo, which is necessary for the correct development of the head and thorax, is studied. Embryos produced by bcd mutant mothers develop with ectopic post-erior structures such as an extra telson and spiracles in place of a proper head and thorax, and also exhibit abdominal defects.

Mechanisms of germ-cell specification in mouse embryos
Article Abstract:
The mode and timing of germ-cell specification is studied in diverse organisms, however, the molecular mechanism regulating germ-cell-fate determination remains to be elucidated. The study shows that in mouse embryos, some germ-line-specific gene products exist as maternal molecules and play critical roles in a pluripotential cell population at preimplantation stages.

hnRNP K: one protein multiple processes
Article Abstract:
The role of heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein (hnRNP) K protein in signal transduction and gene expression from yeast to mammals is reviewed. The relationship between evolutionary expansion of K protein interactions and scale-free protein-protein is discussed.
